Last Wednesday, me with other bloggers had a tour inside the Philippine Gamma Knife Center at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan City.  This one-of-a-kind medical center is established in 1998 and since then, the Philippine Gamma Knife Center has performed more than 1,700 radiosurgical and open stereotactic procedures.

The Gamma Knife (also called as Leksell Gamma Knife) is a product of Elekta AB, a company in Sweden, used to treat brain tumors by administering high intensity radiation therapy in a manner that concentrates the radiation over a small volume. This scientific device was invented at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden back in 1967 by Lars Leksell, a neurosurgeon, and Brje Larsson, a radiobiologist from Uppsala University in the same country.

In a nutshell, The Gamma Knife isn't really a knife at all, but radiosurgery - a non-invasive neurosurgical procedure that uses powerful doses of radiation to target and treat diseased brain tissue while leaving all those surrounding tissue intact. The main difference of Gamma Knife is it can perform successful brain surgery without a knife.

I've been helping a friend revise her resume after she's spent a period not working outside of the house. Here's some advice culled from my experience working in the Sarah Lawrence Career Counseling office, recent online research and a frank discussion with a staffing industry specialist:

First, the staffing industry specialist said that when she looks at a resume, she looks first for two things:

The resume must stand out. The specialist confided that she looks through a stack of 50 resumes in ten minutes. (Ten minutes!) That hurts, but, it is helpful to know the truth. Make sure your resume doesn't get passed over.

Since fields – their expectations, computer programs, laws, etc. – change, it is ok to focus on the last ten years or so, rather than digging much further back into your employment or skill history.

The resume shouldn't just be focused, but also customized for jobs.

Brian Edwards, who grew up in High Point, N.C., has been in talks with the University of Wisconsin-Superior to bring a Michael Jordan basketball camp to the Twin Ports. Edwards recently moved to Superior and has worked with Jordan in the past to hold camps, most recently in 2008.

"We've been really considering bringing a camp here to the Twin Ports," Edwards said. "I think it would be good for the youth and for the general public to have a camp of that caliber here in the area."

UWS men's basketball coach Matt Siverling said he has met with Edwards to discuss the camp, but nothing has been finalized yet. Edwards and Siverling plan to meet again Monday, and Siverling said he should know by the end of the week if the camp will become a reality.

"We'd definitely bring in quality players, former and current NBA players. We've always done that," Edwards said. "The camp usually goes Monday through Friday, but the Sunday before the start date of the initial camp we have an open house for the general public so they can come in and meet some of the guys, get autographs, take pictures. We try to incorporate the general public wherever we do a camp at."

If the camp goes ahead for this year, Edwards said it would likely fall between the end of June and the second week of July, or it could be pushed back to August.
